Gift of the artist and Regen Projects, Los Angeles

James Welling (b. 1951, Hartford, Connecticut) is one of the foremost
photographers in his field. Welling's iconoclastic and structuralist approach to
photography has allowed him to explore a variety of formal and theoretical facets
of picture making. The artist's most recent series, Fluid Dynamics, continues
Welling's study of the relationship between light and the photographic process
through this group of photograms, made by exposing wet photographic paper to
light from an enlarger. Furthering this process, he manipulates the color through
Adobe Photoshop on the digital files of the photogram. Welling's work is currently
on view in a major survey at the Cincinnati Art Museum (catalogue produced). He
has had solo museum shows at the Wadsworth Atheneum, Connecticut (2012);
Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minnesota (2010); Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels
(2002); Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus (2000) and has numerous
publications on his work, including the James Welling: Monograph (Aperture).
Welling lives and works in Los Angeles.
